A great piece Rachel. I am desperate for an hours-long chat with someone dissecting Brooklyn's stories and "Brand Beckham". Despite what people may think, no child estranges from their parents without a good reason - especially in Brooklyn's case, where he's likely saying goodbye to millions in inheritance. When he is putting his own reputation on the line to get the record straight, I can't help but feel he was at his wit's end with it all.

I have always seen Posh and Becks as very controlled. I couldn't imagine growing up with that lifestyle.

I too could talk about them for hours! They have made extremely interesting choices in their lives and for their kids. Up until now them putting their whole lives out there has helped them. But now they are reaping what they have sown. I wonder how the other kids feel about the same issues.

I would love to know the other kids’ thoughts. I have a feeling we will see something similar with the next generation of the Kardashians’ kids (especially Kim’s) in the coming years

Possible but I’ll bet on Kris Jenner every time!!!!!!!!

Estrangement is having a moment. I think, like many topics, people are willing to talk about it more now, but that doesn't change how difficult it is to estrange oneself from family. More to the point, I thin you made your point very well, brand is about control, and over the top control is a driver of estrangement, addiction is another. Those two things control and addiction can also go together.

Great piece. How have people/parents not got the message that forcing your children into a mould that only fits your narrative is a terrible idea and invariably ends badly? Especially when that narrative is around wealth, power and status. And doubly so when played out in public.

I don't know what they were thinking orchestrating a book and exhibitions for his photography when he was only 17. Of course it - and he - was going to get savaged. It seems a very odd move for a couple so obsessed with protecting their image, but perhaps they think they're invincible - or just stupid? They threw him to the wolves with that one. It's hard to not watch and conclude they are only interested in their children being spectacular at something, and 'special' in some way.

Mocking Brooklyn has almost become a national sport in the UK, even when his was a teenager! It's actually quite disgusting. He will be well aware of the things said about him in the press and online, as well as all the articles through his childhood about his parents marriage. I wonder if his reference to 'inauthentic relationships' was alluding to that. And when he tries to defend himself for the first time ever, people criticise him for that as well. He can't win.

So many people think he’s ungrateful and being a brat. While I think he could have gone about this in a more elegant way, you can’t just dismiss his feelings off the bat. If you think about his upbringing for longer than a minute it’s impossible to argue that it wasn’t screwed up

Agree! While I am all in favour of the nepo baby tag, these kids have very difficult upbringings. Yes they are privileged but they can also be badly damaged. The Beckhams are up there with the Kardashians and the royals when it comes to having their kids live very public lives.

Absolutely, on all fronts. I roll my eyes as hard as anyone about them all. If any of them actually turn out to be genuinely good at something though, I wonder if they'd ever get the credit anyway. A toxic mess all round.

Amazed how many people think that because he's rich it negates anything bad that's happened. If your parents have forced fame on you since literal birth you actually can't just go and be a regular, non-famous person once you turn 18 and become 'an adult'. Or certainly not as easily as some people think.

Whether it's objectively true or not, it sounds as if he has grown up feeling his parents prefer their brand to him, and that is desperately sad.
